About the Last Seminar Presenter Dr Arnold Pears Date Friday, 14 December 2007 Time 3:00 -4:00pm Location Room H7.84, Building H, Level 7, Caulfield Campus Title Methods and Approaches to Computing Education Research Abstract The talk presents a general framework for conducting CER studies and presents a view of the key aspects of a rigorous (pragmatic) study. We discuss the implications of the framework for both designing studies as well as judging published work. Biography Arnold Pears received his BSc and PhD from La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia. Dr Pears was a senior lecturer at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia, from 1991 to 1998 moving to Uppsala University, Sweden to take a position there as Senior Lecturer in1999, where he has remained. Dr Pears has a strong interest in teaching and learning research in computer science and engineering. He is widely published in the area, and is well known as a computing education researcher internationally within the ACM, and IEEE. In addition to his role as a Director of CeTUSS (The Swedish National Center for Pedagogical Development of Technology Education in a Societal and Student Oriented Context, www.cetuss.se) he is a regular reviewer for Computer Science Education Journal, the ACM SIGCSE and ITiCSE conferences, and has been a technical programme committee member for the International Computer Science Education Conference (Koli Calling) since 2005. Dr Pears is Poster Coordinator for ACMITiCSE 2008 and Programme Chair for Koli Calling 2008.
