From: FIT Global Emails Date: 22 Aug 2006 13:08:44 To: All Faculty of Information Technology Staff Subject: [FIT Announce] Reminder - CERG Seminar Announcement (Teaching Quality) ****************************************************************************************** This notice was approved for distribution on behalf of Angela Carbone, Senior Lecturer, Caulfield School of IT ****************************************************************************************** Presentor:Kim Styles Date:Friday, 25th August Time:11:00am - 12:30pm Location:Seminar Room, Room 84 Building H, Level 7, Caulfield Campus Topic: Improving the Student Experience Abstract: For many years, and particularly over the last three years, the role of research as the yardstick for academic credibility has overshadowed the critical importance of high quality teaching. The fact is that coursework programs subsidise research - while research might be the muscle, teaching is the backbone of the university. Monash has had Teaching and Learning Plans in place for many years, articulating values and directions, but these have been only partially successful in highlighting the importance of teaching. Recent Monash performance on national measures such as the CEQ, and the Faculty's performance on internal measures including MEQ and Unit Evaluations, has excited reconsideration of the profile of teaching and learning. Monash 2025 and the Education Plan 2006-2008 fundamentally reposition teaching and learning in the spectrum of academic competencies and in the management responsibilities of faculties. In this presentation Kim will explore the implications of this shift for the Faculty of IT, identify upcoming activities affecting the Faculty and consider the role that CERG may play in leading teaching and learning improvements. Biography: Kim has been a member of the Faculty since its establishment, teaching programming, object-oriented analysis and design, and professional communication at Gippsland campus, as well as leading many courses. Currently Director of Education Quality for the Faculty, a member of FEC and the Learning Teaching and Quality Committee, one of the two subcommittees of the University Education Committee, Kim is responsible for advising on and leading improvements in education in the faculty, with the help of the faculty's Education Quality Committee. ****************************************************************************************** For all Faculty Postmaster Activities please submit your request via URL: http://www.infotech.monash.edu.au/itsupport/onlineform/ ******************************************************************************************
